KGVI Pakistan Banknotes

British India Notes with “Government of Pakistan” Lithograph Issued After the 1947 Partition

The King George VI Pakistan banknotes mark a remarkable transitional period in South Asian monetary history, issued in the aftermath of the partition of British India in August 1947. While Pakistan had become an independent dominion, it did not yet have the capacity to issue its own currency. As a temporary arrangement, the Reserve Bank of India continued to act as the currency-issuing authority for Pakistan until 30 June 1948, under an agreement between the two governments.

To distinguish these notes from those circulating in India, existing British India currency notes featuring King George VI were lithographed with the words “Government of Pakistan” in English at the top and “Hukumat-e-Pakistan” in Urdu at the bottom of the watermark area. These were not traditional overprints but carefully applied lithographic additions, intended for exclusive use in Pakistan and not redeemable in India.

This series represents a brief yet significant moment when a newly created nation relied on the infrastructure of its former colonial counterpart. For collectors, these notes offer a rare glimpse into the monetary and political complexities of early post-partition Pakistan, making them highly valued for both their historical relevance and scarcity.
